I wanted to focus on the positives in our college - the people and our practices
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 John 1:2
This fortnight has been punctuated by the news of COVID-19 in media stories and I'm sure this will continue over the next few months. I did not however wish our newsletter to be dominated by these stories alone. Yes, we have had to postpone or cancel a number of excursions and tours as a result of the news but I wanted to focus on the positives in our college - the people and our practices.
Staff Professionalism and Dedication
I am particularly proud of my staff this fortnight as they continue to put our children at the front of all their decision making. Administration staff and cleaners have worked tirelessly to create new processes to meet the changing needs of our new paradigm. Our teaching staff have been progressing not only with exciting teaching and learning experiences in their classes but also preparing online experiences should any temporary shutdowns be required. We have professional, innovative and dedicated staff.
Exciting Curriculum Developments
Bishop Druitt College staff have worked extremely hard over the last two years to revamp our curriculum, our teaching spaces and our practices. I wanted to highlight a handful of our new programs that I am particularly proud of.
The Kaizen Initiative is a multiage program with a problem-based learning focus. It involves students from Years 5 to 8 across Stages 3 and 4. The program allows for student choice and focuses on developing their critical and creative thinking skills. In the last two years students were withdrawn from classes on a rotational basis to complete these exciting projects. In 2020, we have timetabled these electives and increased our student choice. Kaizen is a Japanese word that refers to the concept of continuous improvement.
World Options is our Stage 5 electives program that supports our already exciting curriculum in Years 9 and 10. This is our first year in the World Options curriculum and so we have rolled this out with our Year 9 students, and it will be rolled out with our Year 10s next year. Teachers in secondary put these units together with staff and student teams over a 12-month period. The highlight for me is the authentic learning opportunities and the level of student engagement in each of the units. We are already receiving interest from other schools to see our practices in action.
Students across all year levels in our primary school are taught writing using Talk for Writing. Developed in the UK, this program allows students to improve their skills and strategies regardless of their abilities and background. Talk for Writing allows students to orally learn the language needed for a particular topic or text, before reading it and recreating it in their own writing. The students move from imitation to innovation and finally to independent application. It focuses on high level vocabulary and is also very hands on and interactive. Talk for Writing has been a focus area in our primary years for the last 18 months with a selection of staff trialling the strategies in 2018 and 2019 and a rollout of the program in 2020. On a personal note, watching the teachers work in teams to create highly motivating and creative hooks and then seeing these in the delighted faces of our Stage 1 students is something to behold.
COVID-19 Advice and Updates
Please read the below options for logging student absences.
Option 1 - Parents "Choosing to Self Isolate" but there is no actual concern or sickness with children. It's "Precaution Only"
Action - Parents must log onto Parent Lounge and enter in the dates they are choosing to self isolate and list "Family Reason" (Not "Sick" as their children are not technically sick)
Option 2 - Parents keeping their child at home in isolation as they are showing signs of illness such as the flu etc. (But are not being tested for COVID-19)
Action - Parents must log onto Parent Lounge as normal and list their child away as being "sick"
Option 3 - Parents are required to self isolate children due to medical / travel/government advice (If medical we have to be advised that they or a family member are being tested for COVID-19)
Action - Parents have to notify the admin staff as they are the only people with access to log this type of absence as "Self Isolation". Parent's do not have access to do this on Parent Lounge.

Perspectives: Your school in focus survey
I am excited to invite you to participate in the Perspectives: Your School in Focus survey. This is a school-wide survey for staff, parents/guardians, leaders and board members to assist in the growth and development of our whole school community.
The purpose of the survey is to gather your insights and perspectives on how our school community can continue to lead improvement, innovation and change. Your input and contribution are important as we review and reflect on current practices.
The survey focuses on five important domains: School Environment, Teaching and Learning, Student Wellbeing, Leadership and Community. Collecting information about these areas from our school community members ensures we continue to meet your needs.
We will ask you, and the school community to participate in this confidential and anonymous survey. The online survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete on any internet-connected device and will be available from Monday 30 March through to Friday 10 April 2020.
Only one parent/guardian from each household/family should complete the survey. If you have more than one child currently at the school, please respond considering the child with the next birthday.
You will be emailed details about how to access the survey shortly. Should you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact hheather@bdc.nsw.edu.au or sueoconnor@bdc.nsw.edu.au
As a valued member of the BDC community, I thank you in advance for engaging with the survey and sharing your feedback and thoughts.
Scholarship Opportunities - 2021 applications close 9 April 2020
Applications for scholarships with a special focus are open until Thursday 9 April 2020. Scholarships are available to new and existing students. Preference is given to those applicants who would greatly benefit from a BDC education but who, without financial assistance, would be unable to attend.
Scholarships are awarded at a rate of full (100%) or partial (25% - 50%) tuition fee depending on the pool of applicants and the scholarships available. The number of scholarships presented each year is at the discretion of the Principal. Application fee, enrolment fee and sundry items such as subject levies, elective excursions, subject-related costs and uniform purchases are the responsibility of the family.
Scholarships are generally awarded for a three-year period, provided all conditions upon which the scholarship was awarded are met. This includes general conditions applying to all scholarships and specific conditions applying to individual scholarships.
