The past few weeks have been an extremely busy time in the BDC sports department...

CIS Football Cup - Open Girls - BDC v SCAS

On Wednesday 19 March, the Bishop Druitt College Open Girls team took on St Columba Anglican School in round 2 of the competition. Round 1 was a bye for BDC.

BDC hit the ground running and dominated the match from start to finish. Lola Thomas (Year 9) set the tone early by scoring the opening goal, giving BDC the momentum the team needed to take control.

The team kept putting on the pressure, creating chance after chance and making it nearly impossible for SCAS to attack. With 3 goals from Phoebe Oliver (Year 10), and 2 goals each from Charlotte Bunny (Year 10) and Layla Oliver (Year 12), and a single goal from Lily Mackay (Year 10), the round 3 position against Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School was secured.

The teamwork and attacking plays worked well, especially for the first game together for the year.

By the final whistle, BDC had secured a convincing 9-1 victory.

Congratulations girls.

CIS Football Cup - Open Boys Game - BDC v Lindisfarne

After a successful year in 2024 our open boys football team met Lindisfarne after a bye in round 1.

Playing at Coffs Harbour synthetics, we took on a strong opponent who had beaten Emmanuel in their first game. The game started at quick pace with Lindisfarne pushing and getting in behind our players, with an early penalty awarded after a late challenge in our box. They missed the chance but were awarded another penalty after both teams had some strong chances but Lindisfarne pressing hard. They took this chance to take an early lead. Not long after a Lindisfarne player took a shot from outside of the box, firing their team ahead 2-0.

We then had a player sent off from a late challenge to make it even harder to chase the game going into half time down 2-0. After the break, even with 10 players, we took better field position and possession creating some clear chances, however their goal keeper made some great saves and some near misses. We finally got a goal back with Charlie Wood finishing the goal and our team pushing hard. After some more chances from us, Lindisfarne then took their advantage back to two goals making it just too hard to fight back late in the game.

Our boys were disappointed with the loss but played with great energy and teamwork to fight back after going behind and losing a player early.

NCIS Secondary Netball Championships

The BDC U15s had an outstanding performance at the NCIS Netball competition in Tweed Heads, finishing as the overall winners of the day with an unbeaten record.

The team showcased exceptional skill and a level of gameplay that set them apart.

Congratulations to all the players for their remarkable achievement, with special recognition to Elicia Oxenbridge, Clare Petersen, Eva Fox, Paige Poole, and Amber Daniels, who have earned the well-deserved honour of representing NCIS at the CIS Championships in May.

The BDC Opens NCIS Netball Team once again were the dominant team at the Secondary NCIS Netball Challenge Day. They came up against some determined opposition who threw everything at them.

The Opens won all but one game dominantly, by more than 15 goals, and going down by 3 goals in their opening game to Lindisfarne. This then placed them in a 3 way tie and, on goals for and against count back, BDC came away NCIS champions.

This is the 8th year in a row BDC has maintained the NCIS Netball trophy! Well done to our Opens team!

Congratulations to Caitlin Armstrong, Elarna Duckett, Evie Martin, Lucy Johnson and Mykenzie Smith for their selection in the NCIS Opens Netball Team to compete at the CIS Championships in Sydney in May and to Tully Flynn was selected as a shadow player.

The NCIS Opens team will be coached by our very own, Meegan Bruggemann.

NSW Netball Schools Cup

Bishop Druitt College entered 8 teams into the NSW Netball Primary and Secondary Schools Cup which took place on Wednesday 26th March in Coffs Harbour.

Year 3 /4 Team

The Year 3/4 team played with resilience and an unstoppable spirit, winning every game undefeated. Their incredible teamwork and skill meant no other team scored a single point against them. Through every challenge, they remained positive, encouraging each other and demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship, making their victory even more inspiring.

Year 5/6 Mixed Red & Blue Teams

5/6 Blue were exposed to some great netball during the day at the NSW Netball Cup. They came together as a team and played some skilled netball in the tough conditions. It was fantastic to see these girls rise to the occasion and challenge themselves to grow in skill and game play.

5/6 Red netball team put on an impressive performance in their latest match at the local school competition. Facing strong opposition, the team showcased great teamwork, skill, and determination from start to finish. From the first whistle, our players moved the ball swiftly down the court, with excellent passing and movement in attack. The shooters stayed composed under pressure, scoring some fantastic goals. Mid-court players worked tirelessly to intercept passes and support both attack and defense, while the defenders put in a solid effort to block shots and regain possession. Despite the torrential rain they had some wins and a great day.

Year 7/ 8 Girls Red & Blue Teams

7/8 Red had a fantastic day playing with determination and skill. They won all their round games, except one, narrowly going down in a hard fought, nail biter against Woolgoolga High School by one point.

Yr 7/ 8 Blue also had a great day of netball showing grit and determination against some tough opposition. Their growth witnessed each game was impressive.

All the Yr 7/8 girls are to be congratulated on the team work and commitment they displayed throughout the day.

Year 9/10 Girls Team

Our Year 9/ 10 girls team were standouts on the day, producing consistently dominant performances. They played Woolgoolga High, Toormina High and Coffs Harbour High and were formidable in both defence and attack, finishing the day undefeated. They now will progress to the regional finals in Port Macquarie later in the year. We wish them every success at the regional final!

Year 7/8 & Year 9/10 Boys Teams

Years 7/8 and 9/10 boys teams had an incredible day at the Netball Schools Cup with both only going down one game each. JPC put up a great fight against our 9/10 boys who were down 0-4 at halftime and came back to win the game by one. Every student showcased outstanding representation of themselves and BDC, demonstrating unwavering grit, determination, and true sportsmanship that led them to progress to the next stage in Port Macquarie.

Enormous appreciation to our fabulous Netball staff for an outstanding day, Mrs Meegan Bruggemann, Mrs Shelley Spagnolo, Mrs Sheree Downes, Mrs Rachel Caesar and Ms Alexis Warneckn.

Basketball

Our sports captains Charlotte and Joe ran a 3v3 basketball competition during lunchtime week 8.

Sign-ups were very popular, particularly for Years 7 and 9.

Competition was fierce, with the winners of each year group receiving a canteen voucher for every member in the team.

It was great to see our senior students helping with refereeing and organisation.

Looking forward to some more sporting activities next term.

Football

The Bill Turner Girls team played recently against Coffs Harbour High school and despite some strong performances, went down 2-0 and were knocked out of the competition.

Both the Boys and Girls Open Football teams have played their first round of the CIS Football Cup.

Against some tough opposition, the boys were defeated by Lindisfarne which unfortunately knocked them out of the competition.

After a first game victory against St Columba the girls are playing their next round at Lindisfarne.

AFL

Congratulations to the Senior Girls team who played earlier this week in the NSW Schools Cup.

Two convincing victories and not a point scored against them, sees them progress to the next round.

The Senior Boys team were defeated in both games but were resilient in defeat.
