Paul Kelly Cup AFL
Congratulations to the Paul Kelly Boys team, the team had a convincing win over Yamba Public School to win the regional final in Coffs Harbour last week. Thank you to the NSW/ACT AFL development officers who ran some invaluable skills and drills sessions in the lead-up to the big game. The team has now progressed to the state final to be played in Sydney on 12 September. Thank you to Christabel Martin and Charlie Martin for coaching the team.
As I write this the girls are heading into the round of 16 in the national competition. The next newsletter will have a full wrap of the girl's year.
Congratulations on making it this far. This is the furthest the U15 girls have ever made in a competition.
Outside of BDC Sport Achievements
Body Boarding
Ryan Hill-Smith (10) on the 24th - 26th June competed in the 2022 NSW Bodyboard State Titles at Newcastle Beach, against some of the best bodyboard riders in NSW. Ryan competed in 2 divisions, the Under 18 Boys (U18) and the Open Men. The U18 division is only for Juniors 17 years and under, whilst the Open Men division is open to all men of any age.He has secured a spot in the U18 Boys and the Open Men's to represent NSW. This is a fantastic result for Ryan.
Basketball
Anna Crawley (8) and Maddy Potter (8) represented BDC and Coffs Harbour Basketball at a 3-day Basketball NSW Talented Athlete Program camp at Sydney Olympic Park from Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th August. The girls attended lots of basketball skill sessions as well as education sessions on nutrition, sports psychology and preparation and recovery strategies to improve performance. They also got to scrimmage in games with the best female basketballers in their age group from Sydney Metro and throughout Country NSW.
Rugby Union
Country V City
Kden Carter (8) was selected as the starting full back for the country rugby union team, Kden’s first touch of the footy saw him jumping over to score a try before being taken out by the opposition. Kden enjoyed meeting new mates and playing at the highest level of rugby for his age.
Luke Nilsson (9) represented the Country U15 Rugby Union team v City, in their annual clash for the Steve Tuynman Cup.
Country led 11-0 at halftime but City came out fast in the second half and eventually, City won 17-11. It really was a game that could have gone either way.
The game was played hard and in the real spirit of rugby, with many sore bodies after the game but smiles all around.
Liam Daymond (10) and Tom O’Connor (10) were selected to play for the NSW Country team against the NSW City team. The boys both played excellent rugby helping the country team to a win over the city boys. This is the first time in many years the country boys have finished on top.
Spearfishing
Korben Hart (9) travelled to the Town of 1770 in Queensland to compete in the 68th Australian Spearfishing Championship. It was an amazing experience where he got to meet many of the previous national champions and hear their amazing stories.
On competition day Korben was buddied with Tim McDonald who later took out this year's title of Australian Champion an amazing experience in itself. It was a bumpy ride to Lady Musgrave Lagoon and the fish had obviously been alerted to the competition as they hid well. Korben was able to land a Parrot Fish and Stripey Perch gaining him a Silver Medal, narrowly missing the Gold by 40grams, in the under 15s category.
After returning to Coffs on Friday night he rested on Saturday before waking up at 5am for the local Comp on Sunday, it was here that he took out all of the awards landing a 10kg Jewfish!
