CIS Girls Football

In the first week of this term the open girls football team had a road trip to Western Sydney to compete in the CIS Cup against Mamre Anglican College. This was a team that were runners-up in the competition last year and were coming off a 31-0 victory in their previous game.

We had a good team chat the evening before the game and agreed on an approach to the game, and arrived at the school realistic, positive and looking forward to a challenging game. While we went down 6-2, the girls played awesomely; this was the best I have seen ever from an open girls team at BDC. Very impressive!

The first half saw Mamre score 2 early goals while we adjusted to the pace and skill level of the opposition; we then lifted and were super competitive for the next 20 mins or so until they scored 2 quick goals at about the 25 min mark. We scored a great goal from a long throw in from Charli, headed on by Layla and a sharp finish by Phoebe. They got another good individual goal just before half time taking the score to 5-1 at halftime.

The second half was really competitive in all areas of the field and if anything we had the better chances. In the end it 1-1 in the second half with only an error giving them their goal and we could certainly have had another couple. Phoebe scored our goal from a well taken free kick from range. We were told afterwards that these were the first goals scored against this team other than semis/ finals in years!!

Overall, we stuck to the plan that we had all discussed, worked hard and covered for each other which is all you can ask for as a coach. Congratulations to all the girls who were well led by captain Lulu. The girls certainly felt that they had played well and it was great to see the standard of the top Sydney schools - and relatively we weren't that far off the pace. Huge thanks too to bus driver Nat, a lot of driving for a 2 hour game.
