NCIS Netball success

Bishop Druitt College has had another extremely successful year at the NCIS Netball Competition held at Tweed Heads.

The Opens played exceptional netball demonstrating a high level of skill, determination and composure under pressure. The girls had their most physical and nail-biting contest against Lindisfarne pulling away late in the second half to end the day undefeated and overall winners. The girls are to be congratulated on their sportsmanship and the way they represented the school. Well done to all players.

The U15's Netball team put on an outstanding display of skill and sportsmanship at the NCIS Netball Championships. The team began the day strong and continued to dominate, with a particularly impressive performance in Game 3 against Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School. The girls demonstrated their ability to work together and adapt to challenges, ultimately securing a well-deserved premiership. The team's positivity and support for one another were on full display throughout the day, making it a truly commendable performance. A fantastic day out for the BDC Netball Teams.

Women in Sport Conference

Prue Graham and Kellie Reinhold recently attended the Ministry of Sports: Women in Sport Sumit 2024 on the Gold Coast.

Now in its 6th year, the Women In Sport Summit provides a platform for women to tell their story, be heard and empowered. From the boardroom to the sporting field. The Women In Sport Summit brought sport's most influential figures together to inform, engage and inspire those within the sporting community, offering unprecedented networking opportunities and invaluable connections.

The conference featured several insightful sessions, including a highlight interview with Orla O'Dwyer from the Brisbane Lions AFLW. The session, conducted by Holly Ferling and Griffith University researchers, was titled "Changing The Game and Driving the Conversation." This discussion explored how social media is shaping conversations and building communities around women’s sports, and its role in enhancing brand exposure within the industry. Orla shared her personal journey and perspectives on the evolving landscape of women in sport.

Another key panel, "Creating an Environment for Women in High Performance Sport to Thrive," focused on current trends and future opportunities for women in sports. The discussion provided valuable insights into educational pathways and career prospects for women in the sports sector.

The event was well-attended, with around 500 participants, offering a fantastic networking opportunity for attendees to connect with athletes and researchers from various backgrounds.

A notable figure at the conference was Lizzie Welbourne, an ironwoman and the founder of KaMana. Her organisation is dedicated to empowering female athletes by building their confidence and helping them reach their full potential in both sports and life. High Performance Camp at the Gold Coast

We are thrilled to share the incredible experiences of our recent High Performance Camp at the Gold Coast, where 32 of our High Performance student athletes immersed themselves in an elite sports environment. This four-day camp was designed to challenge, inspire, and elevate their athletic capabilities.

Early Mornings and Intensive Training

Every day began at 5am with a revitalising pool session. This was just the start of a packed schedule that demanded dedication and resilience. The athletes had the privilege of participating in speed track sessions run by Peter Hannan, the Olympic coach of Sally Pearson, the 2012 London Games Gold Medallist in the 100m hurdles.

Comprehensive Seminars

Beyond physical training, the camp included seminars focusing on crucial aspects of athletic development such as mental health, mobility, and functional movement. These sessions provided the students with valuable insights and tools to enhance their overall wellbeing and performance.

Strength and Conditioning

Gym sessions were led by our own strength and conditioning coach, Lili Smyth, who pushed the athletes to new levels of strength and endurance. Additionally, a half-day elite athlete experience at Bond University was conducted by Rick Martin, the highest accredited strength and conditioning coach in Australia. This session was a highlight, offering students a taste of professional-level training and insights.

Elite Experiences and Olympic Inspiration

One of the most exciting parts of the camp was an Ironman session run by Kellogg’s Ironman Joe Collins. His expertise and motivation were contagious, leaving a lasting impact on our young athletes. Also, a tour of the Gold Coast Suns AFL Performance Centre and Stadium Tour, which included the change rooms and on-ground experience. Each day concluded with the students coming together to watch the Olympics.

Gratitude to Our Supporters

This extraordinary camp would not have been possible without the generous support of several key partners. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Hoys Health and Wellness, Newcombes Coachlines, Gold Coast High Performance Centre, Bond University, BMD Northcliffe Surf Club, and Gold Coast Suns. Your contributions provided our students with unparalleled opportunities and experiences.

A special thank you goes to our dedicated staff: Tom Sweeney, Lili Smyth, and Simon Doyle. Your expertise and commitment were instrumental in the success of this camp. Lastly, I express my deepest gratitude to the parents for their ongoing support of the High Performance Program. Your encouragement and involvement are vital to our athletes' growth and achievements.
