SPORT
GENERAL

This is a wrap for sport this year. Congratulations to all our students that have contributed to sport in some way during 2021 (another year of disruptions to competitive sport).

There were some fantastic achievements both individually and from our teams.

Thank you to the parents that have helped at carnivals this year, without your assistance the carnival would not run so smoothly.

Martin and I look forward to working with our students again in 2022 and fingers crossed we get to participate in more sporting competitions.

Water Safety Programs

Our water safety programs have now come to an end for 2021.

It was great to see Year 2 & 4 students make some improvements in the pool.  Learning to swim is a skill that all children should be taught, drowning statistics are still too high in Australia. At BDC we offer these programs to our students from Year 2 and on through Secondary school, however, teaching these skills need to be an ongoing process for our younger students and it would be great to see our families continuing this on for their children.

PLEASE always remember to keep an eye on your children when there are around water, NEVER get distracted or walk away.

Year 6 students have had their day at the beach and under the guidance of Coffs Harbour City Lifeguards have been taught some valuable surf safety skills. Some of the skills taught include how to read the surf, spot rips, where to swim, catch a wave and CPR.

Again, these skills will be built on through their secondary years at BDC.

Junior Primary Swimming Carnival

What a splash!

Junior Primary students had a blast at the carnival, this non-competitive carnival is for the students to have a taste of swimming races and for the year 2 students to put into action what they have learnt in their swimming program.

Thank you to all the staff who helped ensure the students were safe while having fun.

Year 6 Surf Safety

Year 6 had to fantastic days at Sawtell Beach learning some invaluable skills under instruction from the APOLA Lifeguards, Alex, Maddy and Angus.

Monday was the pick of the days with calm seas and very little wind. Thursday the nor wester had picked up and made the sea somewhat wishy washy, it didn’t stop the students having a great day.

Students were taught how to read the water for rips and currents, how to perform rescues with surf boards and some basic CPR skills, they also had the opportunity to ‘catch a wave’ or two, for some students this was a first-time experience.

Thank you to Rach Watson, Lorelle Newton, Martin Kelleher, Ty Gillon, Glenn McNeil, Sally Crane, Kayla Lewis and Patrick Galvin as well as some ex-student helpers Georgia Ensbey and Kate Murray for ensuring our students were safe.

ANZ Tennis Hotshots

Thanks to ANZ Tennis Hot Shots for our free racquets that have been handed out to our Kindy students this week. This is a great way for our students to finish of the Sporting Schools tennis program for 2021.

Outside of BDC Sport Achievements

Congratulations to Daniel Williams (8) he competed in the Athletics NSW 3000m championships at Sydney Olympic Park, he improved that time by nearly half a minute to cross the line in 9min 9 seconds recording a time well under the National qualifying time for his age of 9min 25 needed for next year's Athletics Australia's National championships to be held in Perth.

Finn Clarke (5) and Max Clarke (8) competed in the Victorian Triathle and Laser Run Championship in Geelong over this past weekend. The boys achieved a gold in the Triathle and silver in the laser run. Ted Kleinschafer  (8)  won laser run gold and Triathle silver

Max is also part of the High Performance Program for Modern Pentathlon.
