Thursday, 08 Feb 2024
With heavy hearts, Bishop Druitt College mourns the passing of Bill Ward, a foundational member of our community whose tireless dedication and unwavering commitment shaped the very fabric of our institution. Serving on the Foundation College Council from 1991 to 2018, a span of 27 years, Bill's impact reverberates throughout our halls and beyond.
A man of remarkable credentials, Bill Ward, W.A.Ward, Esq., B.Sc., Dip.Ed. (Q.U.B.), Dip.Sch. Admin. (A.C.A.E.), M.A.C.E., brought a wealth of experience to his role as Assistant to the Headmaster at The Armidale School. His tenure at TAS, spanning from 1977 to 1998, marked the foundation upon which his legacy at Bishop Druitt College would be built.
Bill's journey with Bishop Druitt College began with a visionary quest. Commissioned by the Headmaster of TAS in 1991, he embarked on a mission to establish an "Anglican Coast School." Alongside parishioner Barrie Ross, Bill scoured the greater Coffs region, identifying 23 potential sites. Through his tenacity and foresight, funding was secured, and in 1992, the College Council granted approval for the purchase of land and the commencement of construction on what would become Bishop Druitt College.
Throughout his tenure, Bill Ward served in myriad capacities, embodying the spirit of service and stewardship. As minute secretary, member of the Strategic Planning Committee, and Chair of the Property Committee, his contributions were instrumental in guiding the college forward. Bill's dedication extended beyond official duties; as a volunteer, he attended countless meetings, leaving an indelible mark on the institution he helped nurture.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill's personal warmth and integrity endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. A devoted husband to Kathleen, their love story, rooted in their school days in Ireland, exemplifies the depth of his character and the values he held dear.
As we reflect on Bill's legacy, his absence leaves a profound void, yet his memory serves as a beacon of inspiration. In the words of Archivist Scott Rodham, "It takes a special kind of person to render such unflinching service to God. You are such that person." Bill Ward's legacy lives on in the heart of Bishop Druitt College, forever woven into the tapestry of our community.
On January 16th, 2024, Bill Ward passed away peacefully at his home in Brisbane, surrounded by family. His funeral, a celebration of a life well-lived, was held on January 25th, honoring his enduring legacy and profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
