Genrefication Project 

Genrefication is a system of categorisation and labelling that makes it easier for students to locate books that align with their interests. By categorising books into genres, and labelling them accordingly, students can quickly identify and access materials that cater to their preferences.

The fiction section has been the focus of this process in the secondary library, and we’ve started with: fantasy, dystopian, graphic novels, First Nations, romance, LGBTQIA+, Manga.

Students can explore specific sections that align with their favourite genres, promoting a sense of autonomy and personal choice in their reading selections, or they can explore a variety of genres and expand their reading horizons.

Library staff are always looking for ways to support and encourage reluctant readers, and genrefication also provides a structured approach to finding materials they might enjoy. It can be an immense help to building confidence and encouraging a positive attitude towards reading. A final benefit is that it supports teachers in recommending books based on genres that complement classroom themes or curriculum requirements. eSports

In a recent weekend competition, the BDC Barracudas played Geelong Lutheran College (4th November) in Rocket as part of the Australian ESports League Term 4 High School Cup.

In a 3v3 player match BDC were down one player in a best of 5 game series, but still managed to win 3 games to 1 against the odds.

Players Ronan Guerin and Angus Webb played amazingly well against their Victorian opponents. Both scored some great goals - Go BDC!!

Year 12 on track with research skills

In Week 4 a keen group of Year 12 students attended a fantastic 'kick-start' research session at the Southern Cross University Library - accompanied by Ms Dare (Library Manager) and Mrs Matthews (Year 12 Coordinator).

Students learned about: expectations for academic integrity in their studies; how to reference AI materials; where to find research guides. They also had a 'hands-on' lab session where they were shown university-level database search techniques, and how to navigate their way to quality resources for their HSC studies. 

More research skills and training sessions are planned for a variety of senior subjects, to be held at BDC in 2024.
