32 BDC students from Years 8 to 10 underwent a High Performance Training program over four days at the Gold Coast High Performance Centre in Runaway Bay, Robina Sports High, Bond University, and Palm Beach Currumbin Sports School. Our High Performance Program student-athletes worked with state and national level coaches, sports physiologists and psychologists.
The Gold Coast High Performance Centre is used by international sports teams and individuals and is being developed through extensive renovations and improvements leading up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
During their High Performance Training Program, students visited two other schools that have also developed Athlete Development and High Performance Programs, Robina Sports High and Palm Beach Currumbin.
BDC students also participated in an exclusive half-day immersion of an elite athlete experience at the $45 million Sports Science Training Centre at Bond University.
‘We wanted to give our High Performance Program students experience into what a national training camp looks like and what sport and elite athletes experience during high-level training sessions.’ Nat Titcume High Performance & Athlete Development Coordinator at Bishop Druitt College.
Nat also said, ‘the immersion in this type of elite training helps to create a culture of elite performance. Our High Performance students took away a realistic view of the training and dedication necessary to perform at the highest level.’
Training included:
- Team building and culture
- Mental preparation
- Speed training on an Olympic track and coach
- Injury prevention seminars
- and a speech from Olympic Medalist Justine Smethurst
‘I would just like to say that it was an amazing week and I enjoyed every aspect. The high-performance program as a group and a team learned a lot from this experience and we owe it all to Miss Titcume, Mr Kelleher and Lilli Smythe.’ Tess Caldicott, Year 10 at Bishop Druitt College.
‘The High Performance trip was an amazing experience, I enjoyed every moment of it. The things I enjoyed the most would be visiting Bond University and using their facilities such as the gym and the contrast temperature pools for recovery. This experience has made me want to attend Bond University after my schooling. Another highlight of this trip would be attending other schools, listening to guest speakers, early morning swims, top golf, and spending time with like-minded athletes. This trip has made me want to work harder as an athlete to pursue my dreams of becoming a physiotherapist and continuing my love of netball. I would like to thank Ms Titcume for organising such an amazing experience for us all.’ Madison Parkes Year 10 at Bishop Druitt College.
‘This will become a yearly tour, providing insight into what it takes to become a champion.’ Nat Titcume High Performance & Athlete Development Coordinator at Bishop Druitt College.
