Bishop Druitt College (BDC) is proud to announce its inclusion in The Educator's prestigious 5-Star Innovative Schools list for 2024, a recognition that highlights the school’s commitment to forward-thinking educational practices and outstanding achievements in fostering academic excellence, career readiness, and holistic student development.
As an impartial authority in the education sector, The Educator conducted an exhaustive research study spanning four months to identify and showcase the industry’s top performers.
Bishop Druitt College has emerged as one of the distinguished contributors to the industry. The Educator’s 30+ strong Intelligence Unit determined the winners by following a rigorous process, which included interviewing objective industry professionals and conducting extensive research. The winners are those who matched the exacting 5-Star Innovative Schools 5-Star Employers of Choice criteria.
Over the past 12 months, BDC has continued to lead the way in educational innovation, implementing a wide range of initiatives that have enhanced student learning, teacher development, and community engagement. Central to the college’s achievements is its BDC Digital Badge Program, launched in May 2023. This initiative has recognised nearly 5,000 achievements across 11 faculties, empowering students and staff by showcasing their skills, fostering a culture of achievement, and promoting lifelong learning. The digital badges are a powerful tool that allows students to build a stackable, portable portfolio of skills, which can be shared with potential employers, furthering their career prospects.
Principal Nick Johnstone commented, “We are thrilled to be recognised as one of Australia’s 5-Star Innovative Schools. This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our staff and students, and the dedication to constantly pushing the boundaries of education. We’re committed to providing our students with the tools and opportunities to excel in a rapidly changing world, and it’s rewarding to see the impact of initiatives like the Digital Badge Program and our STEM integration taking shape.”
Another key achievement that has contributed to this recognition is BDC’s AISNSW Teaching School Hubs Program, which offers university students an immersive, real-world teaching experience. In collaboration with AISNSW, BDC has become a hub for teacher trainees to gain hands-on experience, further enhancing the teaching profession and preparing the next generation of educators. The program’s integration of the MOSAIC platform has been pivotal in linking theoretical knowledge with classroom practice, enabling trainees to set and achieve professional development goals while under the mentorship of experienced BDC staff.
In STEM education, BDC has continued to innovate with initiatives like BDC Investigations, Project-Based Learning, and the KAIZEN approach, alongside cutting-edge technologies including 3D printers, robotics, and virtual reality. These initiatives have not only improved student engagement but also prepared them for future career opportunities in industries like engineering, technology, and scientific research.
BDC’s Barracudas Sporting Club has also seen impressive growth, particularly in its football program, which has expanded by 60% and introduced a female-only team. Through its emphasis on teamwork, leadership, and physical fitness, the club supports students in developing essential life skills while fostering a strong sense of community.
The college has also extended its outreach with Macquarie University, providing students with opportunities for career exploration through programs like the Girls to Graduates STEM Program. This partnership has opened doors for BDC students to access new educational pathways, broadening their horizons and preparing them for a successful future.
Through these diverse initiatives, BDC is providing a dynamic and forward-thinking educational experience that not only meets the needs of students today but equips them with the skills and knowledge they need for the future.
