Bishop Druitt College offers Godly Play training supported by Geoffrey Burfoot Trust Fund

Wednesday, 24 July 2024

Bishop Druitt College (BDC) is pleased to share the success of the recent Godly Play training workshop, made possible through the generous support of the Geoffrey Burfoot Trust Fund. This funding empowered ministry units to access accredited Godly Play training locally, eliminating the need for travel to Sydney or Queensland, and greatly reducing the usual course costs.

Godly Play is globally recognised for its innovative spiritual and religious education approach, emphasising community building, creativity, and meaningful engagement with sacred stories. The workshops were run by accredited Godly Play Trainers, Mrs Judyth Roberts and Reverend Kathryn Koning, who brought a wealth of experience to the training.

The recently renovated Bishop Druitt College Chapel provided an idyllic environment, tailored for spiritual nurture and enrichment through Godly Play. Reverend Lisa Williamson affirmed, "The BDC Chapel provides a serene and fitting setting for our Godly Play training sessions. The Chapel is purpose-built for this work, we are delighted to share this space and Godly Play education with other ministry units."

Bishop Druitt College Principal Nick Johnstone said "At BDC, the Godly Play program is an integral part of our primary years, offering a unique and enriching approach to religious education. Through the use of biblical stories, Godly Play helps our students connect these ancient narratives to their own lives, fostering a deep sense of spirituality and personal growth. This program not only enhances their understanding of faith but also encourages them to reflect on their values and the world around them, making the teachings of the Bible relevant and meaningful in their everyday experiences."

Participants in the training course gathered from a variety of ministry units and church backgrounds and expressed their appreciation of this accessible and high-quality training opportunity, as well as their enjoyment of the beautiful location and hospitality offered by Bishop Druitt College.

Looking forward, Bishop Druitt College aims to establish an enduring community of practice where ministry units can continue to refine their Godly Play proficiencies collaboratively. Reverend Lisa commented, "The objective is to equip leaders who are formed in the transformative Godly Play method, which invites children and young people to participate fully in the work of the faith community - forming connections, engaging with scripture, and responding to God’s call in their lives.”
