Flash fiction is a fictional work of extreme brevity that still offers character and plot development. Writing flash fiction involves compressing the very best parts of fiction into very small packages that have a big impact on readers. In Term 3, BDC held the inaugural Flash Fiction competition which turned out to be a popular event, especially during remote learning. We will definitely be running it again in 2022!

Congratulations to Olivia Gruber-Styles who placed first in the Year 7 & 8 division, Hermione Beswick who came first in the Year 9 & 10 division and Imogen Grebert who placed first in the Year 11 & 12 division. They will each receive house points and their stories will feature in this year’s Etcetera magazine. 

“Emptiness flows through me as I ignore the chatter. Bodies mingling, brushing past. Lights blink into existence above as I stumble through the bustling crowd. Heavy rain pelts down and I dash for safety. The clouds close in, looming ever closer as the storm builds. I break into a sprint, left at the traffic lights, right at the IGA. Home. Carpet soft underfoot, air comforting from the heater, cat nudging my leg. I open my phone to check the time. 17:28. My heart aches. The screensaver flickers to black, the battery dies. Along with the photo of him.”
