This wonderful cohort are fast approaching graduation day and have been immersed in exams and future career planning. Many have applied to study at university next year (some have already received their offers to study at Uni through early entry schemes!). Some are planning a gap year while they work and/or travel. Whatever their aspirations for next year (uni/apprenticeship/work/gap year options), I encourage them to make a careers appointment with me to discuss their individual planning. All students have been using the dedicated BDC Careers Website link here which has some great resources and tools to assist them with not only careers, but money, budgeting, scholarships, apprenticeships, and some great resources for parents.
University of Sydney comes to BDC
Savvy students from Years 10, 11, and 12 took advantage of University Of Sydney's presentation on our BDC campus at lunchtime last week. Students learned about courses, the new MySydney entry pathway, scholarships, and more. BDC students kept #sydneyuniversity student ambassadors busy with a lively question time! Thank you Tyrone, Joel, and Angela for your time with our kids.
Post School Options Career Expo
Year 11 Students accompanied Mr Dierkx and myself to the Post School Options Expo at CHEC this term. Students had the opportunity to talk to local and interstate universities and colleges, accommodation providers, employers, police and ADF recruitment, support services, UAC, and more!
Thank you to Rachel and the Clarence Coffs Career Advisor Network for organising this fabulous Careers event.
Southern Cross University Course Taster Day
Year 10 have been invited to attend a fantastic day at SCU where they can take part in 2-course tasters in their area of interest. Students can choose to try courses in
Education
Environmental Science
Marine
Nursing
Occupational Therapy
Sport & Exercise Science
This day is a great opportunity for our students to get a taste of life as a uni student!
Year 10 Work Experience Career Exploration Week
In Term 4, Year 10 will be undertaking their Career Exploration Week. We’ve changed the name, as many students already have casual jobs and “work experience”. Rather, this week is about exploring a career that they may be interested in pursuing when they leave school. Our students are busy finding placements locally and interstate. Completed forms are due into the Careers office by the end of this term.
As an alternative offering for Career Exploration Week, 16 students have been offered an opportunity to undertake a Cadet program with the Coffs Harbour Rural Fire Service, where they will learn some fabulous skills and find out about work and career opportunities with this important community organisation.
Year 9 Careers Morning
I am delighted to be running a dedicated careers morning with Year 9 at the end of this term. Year 9 will be undertaking some activities to explore their interests and look at their own unique skills and attributes. They will be looking at the differences between university and apprenticeship pathways and will be hearing from some guest speakers. Watch this space for photos of the session!
