Tahnee Philp (HSC 2013) undertook teacher training doing a short stint in the Northern Territory and then was targeted in 2019 to Bexley North Public School.
She has been appointed as the first teacher at the newly established Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School (GGFS) in Coffs Harbour. It is registered as the first Aboriginal school and sponsored by the Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation and approved by the NSW Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning. It is an Independent school under the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and will open in February 2022, at the start of the international decade of indigenous languages.
The GGFS will be the first bilingual school employing two Gumbaynggirr language teachers and will attract students from the Nambucca Valley, north to Grafton. It is to be housed at the Coffs TAFE’s Glenreagh Street campus, taking enrolments for K to 2 students.
