AISNSW Teaching Hub Celebrates First Graduate, Kayla Baker

Thursday, 07 Nov 2024

The AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program is proud to announce its first graduate, Kayla Baker, who has recently accepted a science teaching position at Coffs Harbour school Bishop Druitt College (BDC) for 2025. Kayla’s journey from student to teacher is a testament to the program’s commitment to immersing trainees in school life and culture, ensuring they are fully equipped for their future roles.

Having completed Year 12 at BDC in 2018, Kayla pursued a Bachelor of Marine Science and Management, but faced challenges in securing graduate employment during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I realised that teaching was my Plan B, and I enrolled in a Master of Teaching,” she shared. “My passion for educating others about the marine environment drove me towards this career.”

Kayla's decision to join the AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program stemmed from her desire to gain comprehensive teaching experience. “BDC is my dream school, and the Teaching Hub offered a unique opportunity to immerse myself in a full year of teaching. This experience goes beyond a short placement and truly prepares you for a career in education.”

The program provides Education Trainees with weekly classroom teaching, mentorship from experienced teachers, and paid employment, allowing them to balance their studies with practical experience. Kayla noted the invaluable support she received from her Mentor Teacher, Juliette Law. “We had regular catch-ups and planning sessions. Juliette’s guidance helped me grow my confidence in the classroom,” she said.

Kayla faced challenges, particularly in juggling university studies and completing the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA). “It was a huge task, but I launched an ETSY shop called ‘resourcesbymissb’ to share teaching resources for pre-service teachers, which also helped me in the process,” she explained.

As she embarks on her new role at BDC, Kayla is excited about the opportunity to inspire her students. “I can’t wait to bring my passion for science to the classroom,” she said.

For future Education Trainees considering the AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program, Kayla advises, “Get involved in as much as you can. Every challenge is a learning experience, and your future self will thank you for it. Go for it!”

The AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program continues to seek passionate individuals ready to embrace the challenges and rewards of a teaching career. If you’re interested in joining this innovative program, please contact us for more information.
